Ingredients and Variations

Cookies – Oreos are a chocolate sandwich cookie with a crème filling, but the store brand will work (and save a few bucks)! Other fun cookies to use are thin mints, vanilla, strawberry, or fudge sugar wafers, shortbread, and even peanut butter (Nutter Butter) shaped cookies can be decorated to look like snowmen – so many ideas!

Candy Melts – White or milk chocolate melts and almond bark are specially formulated to melt and coat anything from cookies to fruit, plus they’re really easy to work with. Add an extract like mint, vanilla, rum, or orange (as long as it’s oil-based) for even more flavor. Tint white chocolate melts or almond bark with food coloring and drizzle over the top, if desired.

Decorations – The sky is the limit for decorations! Try Christmas sprinkles or jimmies, silver or gold balls (dragees), colored nonpareils, chopped nuts, toasted coconut, dried fruit, and crushed candy canes.

Tips For Success

  • Set up the decoration station so the cookies are ready to dress up as soon as they come out of the chocolate. Work efficiently as the chocolate will harden quickly.
  • Insert a popsicle or lollipop stick into each cookie for dipping and feel free to leave it on as a fun handle and then wrap them like lollipops for a festive treat to share.
  • For a perfectly melted candy coating, make sure the microwave-safe bowl and spatula are dry, any moisture will cause the melts to seize and become grainy. Melt the coating in stages, stirring between each stage so it melts evenly. Feel free to reheat as necessary if it hardens.

Simple Storage Solutions

Keep Christmas dipped Oreos in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks. Wrap each cookie in plastic wrap and place in a zippered freezer bag to freeze for up to 3 months.
