Homemade Fried Pickles

Baked pickles have the same crispy coating without being fried in oil, making them a healthier choice without sacrificing flavor. And cleanup is a breeze!

PICKLES – Sweet, dill, or spicy, there’s a pickle for every palate! Buy them whole and cut into desired shapes and sizes, or purchase pre-cut jars of spears and rounds. Easy fried pickles can be made with round slices or thinly cut spears like French fries, or they can even be cut into oval slices.

BREADING – Bread crumbs and Panko are always a winning combination because it creates a light, crispy and crunchy coating.

SEASONING – The seasoning for this breading is composed of a simple combination of garlic and hot sauce. However, any complementary seasoning works as long as it doesn’t overwhelm the tangy, vinegary flavor of the pickle. Mix in some powdered ranch dressing, taco seasoning, or a spicy Cajun rub and create a signature recipe!

How To Fry Pickles in Oven

Baked pickles are better than potato chips, and they are super easy to make:

  1. Combine the flour and seasonings in one bowl, the whisked eggs and hot sauce in another, and the breading ingredients in a third bowl.
  2. Dip the pickles in the seasoned flour, the egg wash, and then coat in the breadcrumbs.
  3. Lay pickles on a prepared baking sheet and bake per recipe below, flipping halfway through baking.

Tips for Success

  • For best results, make sure the pickle pieces are very dry so the egg batter and breading adheres properly.
  • If you are cutting your own slices from whole pickles, cut them at least ¼” thick or thicker.
  • Using a small pair of tongs for each of the breading steps will ensure an even coating and keep your hands free from constant rinsing while you assemble them!

Ingredients

  • 15 ounces pickle slices patted dry (16 ounce jar)
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 eggs whisked
  • ½ teaspoon hot sauce
  • cup bread crumbs
  • cup panko

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Combine flour, garlic powder and pepper in a bowl, eggs and hot sauce in a second bowl, and panko and breadcrumbs in a third bowl.

  • Dip the pickle slices in the flour, then the egg wash, and finally the breadcrumbs.

  • Spray with cooking spray and place on the prepared baking sheet.

  • Bake for 12-14 minutes flipping the pickles halfway through cooking.

Notes

  • A 16 ounce jar should yield about 30 pickle slices.
  • Be sure pickle pieces are very dry so the egg batter and breading will stick.
  • Cut pickles at least ¼” thick or thicker.
  • Use tongs for each of the breading steps for even coating.
