DIY Hot Chocolate Bombs
We love to recreate trending new ideas. Hot cocoa bombs are orbs made of chocolate, and filled with yummy goodies like cocoa and mini marshmallows. When hot milk or water is poured over them, the ‘bomb’ breaks open and all the yumminess melts when it’s stirred up! Hot chocolate bombs can be hard to find or pricey to buy, so we created a DIY recipe that’s right up there with the best. Serve with some festive funfetti cake for extra Valentine’s sweetness!
Ingredients and Variations
These Cotton Candy Hot Cocoa Bombs are made with pink and blue chocolate candy melts, cotton candy, a few tablespoons of strawberry milk powder, and of course, marshmallows!
Variations
- Hot chocolate bombs can be made with all kinds of chocolate: semi sweet, dark, or even white chocolate.
- Fill them with powdered hot cocoa mix, crushed peppermint candies, mini chocolate chips, caramel sauce, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, red hot candies, even candy sprinkles!
- Hot chocolate bomb molds come in varying sizes. We prefer the 2 ¼” inch silicone mold because the effect is more dramatic when they break open.
How To Make A Hot Chocolate Bomb
- Melt the pink and blue chocolate melts in separate bowls in the microwave, stirring at regular intervals.
- Spoon 1 tablespoon of each color into each mold. Create a ‘marble’ effect by swirling the melts around the mold.
- Chill to harden.
- Remove chilled molds from the refrigerator and fill each mold with strawberry powder, some mini marshmallows and cotton candy.
- Melt the edge of an empty sphere on a plate that was warmed in the microwave. Carefully lift it off the plate and secure it to a filled hot chocolate bomb and run a clean finger around the edges to seal.
To Serve: Set off a hot chocolate bomb by placing it in a mug. Pour hot milk or water over it and watch it burst open! Stir and enjoy!
Tips For Perfect Hot Cocoa Bombs
- While microwaving, be sure to avoid getting water in the melts to prevent them from becoming grainy.
- Overlap the melts a little over the edge of each mold to make them easier to seal.
- Warm a spoon under hot water and gently press the back of each edge to make them perfectly flat.
Optional: Drizzle the outside of each bomb with colored icing and add sprinkles or small candies for a more decorative effect.
Time Saving Tips!
- Assemble all ingredients and equipment prior to beginning.
- Place bowls of melted chocolate in a hot water bath to keep the chocolate warm and melty.
- To speed up the chilling process put bombs in the freezer for about 5 minutes.
How Do You Store Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Keep hot chocolate bombs in a sealed container at room temperature, away from direct heat and they’ll keep for about 2 weeks. Freeze hot chocolate bombs in a zippered bag with the date labeled on the outside for up to a month.

Cotton Candy Hot Cocoa Bombs
These DIY Hot Chocolate Bombs are so easy to make and are perfect to give as a gift, or just enjoy on a cool winter afternoon or evening.
Ingredients
- 1 cup pink chocolate candy melts
- 1 cup blue chocolate candy melts
- 6 tablespoons strawberry milk mix
- ½ cup mini marshmallows
- Cotton candy
- Half sphere silicone mold
Instructions
-
Melt the pink and blue candy melts in two bowls for 30 second increments, stirring in between, for about 60-90 seconds. Spoon 1 tablespoon of each color into each half sphere mold.
-
Swirl the two colors together using the back of a spoon or a pastry brush, creating a ‘marbled’ effect. Set in fridge or freezer until hardened.
-
Once set, carefully remove each sphere from the mold. If the sides are delicate, you may need to strengthen the top edges with a little of the leftover candy melts.
-
In 6 of the sphere halves, spoon 1 tablespoon strawberry milk powder, a couple mini marshmallows and some cotton candy.
-
Warm a small plate in the microwave for 45 seconds. Place one of the empty sphere halves on the plate for a few seconds to let the edges melt.
-
Place on corresponding, filled half sphere, aligning the edges. Run a clean finger around the edge to smooth it out. Repeat with remaining 5 spheres.
